Christmas Day at work and the bar
Hannah Flannagan's on Biltmore Avenue was one buzzing sign of life in downtown Asheville on Saturday night. About 20 patrons sipped beer and ate pub food as they watched NBA basketball games and chatted.
At one table, four Mission Hospitals nurses sat drinking water and sodas and relaxed after a long day of work. The women said they had been working since about 7 a.m. and had just gotten off work about 7 p.m. Three of the four said they were returning to the hospital to sleep in hospital beds overnight and fill in for colleagues who couldn't make it to work tomorrow.
"Christmas is when you make it when you work at the hospital," said Martha DePaola, who worked Christmas eve and planned to celebrate the holiday Tuesday.

Road conditions will deteriorate through the day. Tonight re-freezing of melted snow/sleet could create very hazardous driving conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Weather officials warn of hazardous road conditions today and especially into tonight as the region is expected to be blanketed in up to five inches of snow.
“Motorists need to be cautious Sunday, but especially Monday as melted snow may refreeze into black ice,” said Hal Austin, a duty forecaster with the National Weather Service in Newport.
Three to five inches of snowfall was expected to fall on Onslow and Carteret counties by Monday with a heavier accumulation in the Richlands area than on the coast, Austin said.
Winter storm advisories are in effect across the state as snow began falling at about 8 a.m. Saturday morning in the mountains at a rate of about an inch per hour. Authorities said mountain roads are impassable for all but four-wheel drive vehicles.
In Onslow County, residents were buying up milk, bread and eggs from the few convenience stores open Christmas Day.
Originally from Florida, Hubert resident Avid Osman said he had never been in a snowstorm and didn’t know what to expect. He bought milk and other groceries from the Scotchman on N.C. 172.
“It’s supposed to snow and the roads could be closed,” he said. “Better to be ready.”
Even though the flurries arrived a little late, this weekend was expected to be the first White Christmas for Eastern North Carolina since 1989 when a foot of snow fell along the coast, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Authorities advise caution when driving during inclement weather and suggest motorists remain home unless they absolutely have to travel.
AAA Carolinas offers the following tips for those who drive during winter weather conditions:
- Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
- Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
- Never mix radial tires with other tire types.
- Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
- If possible, avoid using your parking brake in snowy weather.
- Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface.
- Always look and steer where you want to go.
- Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.Source : http://www.jdnews.com/news/conditions-86130-officials-warn.html
