Premier League sack race: Roy Hodgson leads race at 4-7 on with Carlo Ancelotti close second

Premier League sack race: Liverpool's Roy Hodgson is 4-7 on to be axed next with Carlo Ancelotti a close second

Midweek results have piled on the pressure for a clutch of high-profile managers, with Roy Hodgson, Carlo Ancelotti, Avram Grant and Gerard Houllier all fearing the sack.
The lower leagues have experienced a rash of dismissals recently with eight managers leaving their clubs in just eight days.

Already, 26 men have departed, and with five months remaining of the season, that figure could double as clubs panic.

Top of the list of men set to leave is Hodgson with bookmakers rating his chances of being sacked by Liverpool at 4-7 on.

The experienced manager led Fulham to the final of the Europa League last season but since arriving at Liverpool he has won just seven games, out of 20 in the Premier League while his side were hugely embarrassed by League Two side Northampton, losing on penalties in the Carling Cup at Anfield.

Fans are restless – graffiti appeared overnight near the training ground at Melwood with the words ‘Hodgson Out' - with many urging the club to re-appoint Kenny Dalglish following the 3-1 loss at Blackburn Rovers.
The club's board are considering whether to make a change.

But Hodgson is not the only leading manager under pressure.

Second favourite for the sack, according to bookmakers William Hill, is Chelsea's Ancelotti, who suffered the latest embarrassing loss when the champions were humbled by Wolves at Molineux.
The defeat leaves Chelsea's title push in tatters; they have won one game in nine, taking just seven points from a possible 27.

Chelsea have 35 points, nine points behind leaders Manchester United and a massive 13 points fewer than at this stage last season.

Rumours were rife before Christmas that Ancelotti would be the latest manager to be sacked by Roman Abramovich and the recent run leaves the manager in a dangerous position.

The future of Avram Grant appears just as shaky with the Israeli rated at 7-2 for the sack.
The West Ham United manager was said to have been given three games to save his job and he responded with two wins and a draw.

But the 5-0 thrashing at Newcastle has seen his position become unstable again, with the club understood to be unsure of the manager's future and rumours circulating east London that he could be sacked before the weekend.
Gerard Houllier, appointed only in September as successor to Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa, is 13-2 to walk following the 1-0 home defeat by Sunderland.

Villa have won one of their last nine in the league and have lost six of their last eight.
Houllier insisted, after the defeat by Sunderland, that he still had the backing of owner Randy Lerner.
Mark Hughes, the Fulham manager, is probably safe after the 3-0 win over West Brom, though his odds are 9-1, while Wolves are likely to stick with Mick McCarthy (16-1) despite their precarious position.

Liverpool FC fans launch petition to get coach Roy Hodgson sacked

Roy Hodgson is under great pressure to save his job as manager at one of England's biggest clubs Liverpool. Fans at the club have now launched an online petition to test the strength of fans' contempt towards the former Fulham boss.
Following Wednesday night's humiliating 1-0 defeat at the hands of bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers, fans now want Hodgson out. He has only been in charge six months but his reign at the club has been less than successful - they currently lie 12th in the English Premier League table.

Only this morning Hodgson apologised to Liverpool fans for any offence caused by his comments after the home defeat by Wolves and then vowed he will not quit, reports BBC Sport. It was Liverpool's eighth defeat in the league this season and many angry fans chanted, "Hodgson for England" throughout the game. The chants however were not meant to be complimentary, rather a sarcastic call for the beleaguered manager to go and manage the national side, leaving Liverpool to appoint a new manager.

Sportsmail reports the Reds currently sit just three points above the Barclays Premier League relegation zone after a disastrous start to the campaign. So far thousands of signatures have been added to the petition which includes a 3,000-word accompanying letter explaining just why they want Hodgson removed. The letter also points out Hodgson's inexperience at top level, his poor relationship with the media and fans alike as well as his lack of quality signings. It also pleads, "'Mr Hodgson asked to be judged after 10 games. We have given him 18 and he has provided the worst start to a league campaign for 57 years. Even by his own measures, he deserves to go.'

Hodgson must now face a huge challenge to raise his badly deflated players for the Bolton game, at home, on New Years' Day which starts a defining run of five matches in 15 days. Liverpool will also face a trip to Blackburn Rovers on January 5 followed by an FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester United on January 9 before league games against Blackpool and Everton.
