Football: Malaysia Edge Vietnam To Enter AFF Cup Final After 14 Years

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia ended a 14-year wait to book a place in the final of the AFF Suzuki Cup after holding Vietnam to a 0-0 draw in the second leg semifinal at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam Saturday night and advance on a 2-0 aggregate score.

Malaysia who scored a 2-0 win over Vietnam in the first leg semifinal at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, will meet either Indonesia or the Philippines who are scheduled to play tomorrow.

Armed with a two goal advantage, coach K. Rajagobal's boys were more focused in defence tonight, allowing the Vietnamese to launch a continuous attack which kept goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat busy throughout the 90 minutes.

The match saw numerous goal-mouth action but the Vietnam players, in their haste to score, were guilty of missing many chances although they kept the match under their control.

The Malaysian players, depending mainly on counter-attacks, did have a sniff or two at the Vietnamese goal but hardly tested their goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong who unlike the first leg, was hardly seen making any noteworthy saves.

Vietnam, despite playing at home and backed by their hostile fans, seemed lost and matters turned for the worst in the 71st minute when Pham Thanh Luong who was earlier booked for a foul, was given the marching orders by the referee for diving after an alleged tackle by S. Kunalan in the penalty box.

Malaysia's first appearance in the final of the AFF Cup (called Tiger Cup) was back in the inaugural tournament in 1996 but lost 0-1 to Thailand.

Since then, Malaysia lost four times at the semifinal stages to Thailand (2000), Indonesia (2002, 2004), Singapore (2007) and twice were knocked out in the group stages (1998, 2008).

Teams:

MALAYSIA: Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar, Mohamad Muslim Ahmad, Mohd Sabre Mat Abu, Mohamad Fadhli Mohd Shas, Amar Rohidan, Safiq Rahim, S. Kunalan, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal (Mohamad Ashari), Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (Mohd Amri Yahyah), Mohd Safee Mohd Sali.
