Metrodome Roof Collapses

[UPDATE, 11:57 AM EST: The game will reportedly be played Monday night in Detroit with a 7:20 p.m. ET start. ]

[UPDATE, 10:57 AM EST: Alternate sites are now being considered as the Metrodome has been ruled unplayable this week. Seems like Detroit's Ford Field might be the leading candidate.]

[UPDATE: Metrodome officials are saying it is "unlikely" the facility would be ready for a game by Monday night. I will be updating this story as much as I can over at SB Nation New York. Keep checking over there for new information.]

So much for my theory that Minnesota Vikings' officials were just trying to get an extra day of rest for Brett Favre's ailing shoulder. Turns out those concerns around the safety of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in the wake of Saturday's storm were well-founded.

The Metrodome roof has collapsed.

From NFL.com:

The Metrodome is operated by the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. Its executive director, Bill Lester, said Sunday morning the damage is being assessed and the agency will issue a statement later. He says he has no details yet on what happened.

Minneapolis and much of the upper Midwest have been hit by a blizzard that has dumped up to 20 inches of snow in some areas.

The Vikings' Sunday NFL football game against the New York Giants had already been pushed to Monday. It is not clear what will happen to the schedule now.

What now? The game has to get played at some point. My first thought is to move the game to New Meadowlands Stadium on Monday night, provided the teams can safely travel to New Jersey.
