Police Search for Man Who Robbed the Bellagio

LAS VEGAS -- A lone gunman is on the loose after a daring casino heist. The suspect, while wearing a motorcycle helmet, robbed a craps table in the Bellagio Tuesday morning and escaped with $1.5 million dollars in chips.

The early morning casino caper at the Bellagio took less than three minutes, and the suspect specifically targeted the craps tables. Surveillance video shows the motorcycle bandit running from a craps table after pulling a gun and making a simple but scary demand in front of shocked gamblers.

"He told everyone not to move, and he took approximately $1.5 million worth of casino chips," said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Clint Nichols.

No one was hurt in the robbery. Security cameras captured the robber as he fled the casino floor. Metro says the crook jumped on his motorcycle and traveled westbound on Flamingo Road. He sped away with the gambling chips, while security watched in disbelief.

"A lot of security precautions you could put in place at government installations and banks and so on," said Worldwide Casino Consulting owner and casino security expert George Joseph. "You really can't put in place too much out front in a casino. We're an entertainment venue, and we're customer friendly."

Metro believes the same helmet-wearing robber held up the Suncoast poker room in Summerlin on December 9. He stole $20,000 in cash from that heist.

The suspect's daring heist has patrons at one of the most popular casinos on the Strip stunned. Thieves pulled off a fictional heist at the Bellagio in the movie "Oceans Eleven", but this casino hold-up created real-life drama.

"It's like a movie set. That's what I think of. It's probably so unbelievable, it worked," said Albuquerque, New Mexico resident Adelina Graef.

"I'm sure he's going to try it again and eventually, they're going to catch him," said Las Vegas resident Courtney Ogbuehi.

"He's stupid, because you've got to cash the chips in at the casino. You can't get away with it. He's just stupid," said Las Vegas resident Willis Jackson.

"I've written a bunch of books on Vegas," added Joseph. "This one might go into the next book about how he stole a million and a half dollars worth of plastic souvenirs."

Police would not say if the casino chips contained tracking devices. This is the tenth casino robbery this year, but the size of this job, $1.5 million dollars stolen, is rare.

Police say the suspect is a white man, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds. His motorcycle is a black 2009 or 2010 sport bike. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or visit the Crime Stoppers website.
