Iran plane crash kills 72, minister says
Tehran - A plane crash near Orumieh in Iran's Azerbaijan province killed 72 people, the transportation minister said Monday.
It was unclear whether the Boeing 727 belonging to the national carrier Iran Air was trying to make an emergency landing due to bad weather when it crashed Sunday.
Minister Hamid Behbahani put the death toll at 72, but his deputy Ahmad Majidi told Fars news agency that 77 were killed, 26 injured and two still missing, probably still inside the plane.
Officials also made contradictory remarks on the number on people on board and whether it was a crash or emergency landing.
According to Majidi, the plane was en route from Tehran to Orumieh in north-western Iran on Sunday. Ten minutes before landing at Orumieh airport, the plane had to return to Tehran due to bad weather but then made an emergency landing near the provincial capital.
The Red Crescent announced after reaching the site Sunday night that more than 70 people had died.
Iran Air said there were 106 people on board, comprising 91 adult passengers with seats, two children, one baby and 12 crew members. Other sources gave different figures.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday ordered the Transportation Ministry to investigate the cause of the crash.
The Islamic state cannot purchase new passenger planes because of international sanctions and is still using Boeings for internal flights that are almost 40 years old.
