Regina King Jet Interview - On Southland, Women and Malcolm Jamal Warner
Regina King, in a recent Jet interview, opens up about her role in Southland, women of color, and rumored engagement to Malcolm Jamal Warner.
She is best known as the very studious and polished Brenda Jenkins in the '80s sitcom 227. Today, she is known for her role as a female intuitive cop on the TNT hit Southland.
Not known for holding in her anguish about various topics, particularly about sweat equity and equality, this Hollywood social activist-in-the-making revealed some interesting things about her life in a recent Jet interview.
Regina King on her Southland role
In the TNT hit show, now in its second season, King plays Detective Lydia Adams. By all accounts, the character was directly in line with her real life, minus the gun and shield. She plays a single, unmarried mother with many layers and a lot more personality than many of her peers. Sorry, Vivica.
She says her role in law enforcement gave her a new appreciation of the role street cops play in protecting and serving. She actually immersed herself in the role with boot camp-like training along, with tons of research to make it seem second nature. It appears to be paying off, as the show is highly followed.
Controversial remarks in the Huffington Post
"The Emmy's are as White as Ever" read the headlines in a Huffington Post article King posted last year. In that article, she speaks on the disparity in how women are under-represented. Recall that the Higher Learning star wrote a controversial article on how women were not given instrumental roles as their male counterparts.
Immediately, she found herself under fire from other minorities who said she was turning a blind eye to their current condition. Ever since, she has been in a battle to restore the original intent of the article that included all women of color, not only Blacks.
Her beau Malcolm Jamal Warner
In an interview with Essence, the veteran actress and "go-to" girl Regina King said this about her rumored romance:
"Malcolm and I have a lot in common. We've both been child actors and were also blessed to be raised by incredible mothers who instilled good values in us. Things are maturing nicely."
In keeping with privacy in her personal life, especially when it comes to romance, she didn't share much more beyond the cryptic talk. It is widely known that she and the former Cosby Show child actor have been dating. Are wedding bells in the cards for Regina Bell?
